Package name and versioning

How to choose a package ID you can keep forever, and how versions increase.

Updated October 1, 2026 · 1 min read

Package name

The package name (for example com.example.myapp) identifies your app on the device and on Google Play. It cannot be changed after the first upload to Play, so set it before publishing. ApkZio suggests one from your domain; edit it if you own a matching reverse-domain (com.yourdomain.app).

Rules: lowercase letters, numbers and dots; at least two segments; each segment starts with a letter; no reserved words such as class.

Version code and name

Every rebuild increases the version code by one, which is what Play uses to order releases. The version name (1.0, 1.1, 2.0) is what users see; you can set it on the Review step.

Changing branding later

Name, icon, colours and features can change on any rebuild without affecting the package name or signing key. Upload the new AAB as a new release.
