Most WordPress sites are already 90% of an app. They are responsive, they update themselves, and they have an audience that would rather tap an icon than type a URL. This guide covers the remaining 10%: branding, native features, signing and the Play Store listing.
1. Check the site
Open the site on a phone. If it is readable and the menu works, you are ready. Make sure it is served over HTTPS and that no maintenance-mode plugin is active. Security plugins that block unknown user agents should allow the Android WebView (it identifies as Chrome with a wv token).
2. Build the app
Paste the URL in the ApkZio builder. It reads your site title, favicon and theme colour. Upload a 512×512 icon if the favicon is small, pick the accent colour, and choose portrait orientation for a reading app. Switch on offline mode so the last articles stay available without data.
3. Push notifications
Create a free OneSignal app, paste the App ID into the builder, and install the OneSignal WordPress plugin to send a notification on publish. Readers who install the app will be prompted for permission after their first session, which converts much better than asking immediately.
4. Download and test
Install the APK on a phone (allow installs from unknown sources for the transfer method you use), open it, and click through the menu, a post, a search and the comment form. Rotate the phone. Turn on airplane mode and confirm the offline screen appears.
5. Publish to Google Play
Create a Play Console account, make a new app, and upload the AAB under Production or Internal testing. Fill in the store listing (screenshots from the phone are fine to start), the content rating questionnaire, the data-safety form and your privacy policy URL. Review usually takes a few days for a new account.
Common rejections and fixes
- “Minimum functionality”: add value beyond the site, such as push notifications and offline mode, and describe them in the listing.
- Missing privacy policy: publish one on your site and link it in Play Console.
- Broken links: test every menu item inside the app before submitting.
When you change the site, the app updates itself. Rebuild only when you change the icon, name, colours or native features, then upload the new AAB.
